Curriculum Vitae

Professor Erich Wintermantel, previously full professor of biomaterials science and engineering with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zürich, was elected Professor Ordinarius with the TUM department of mechanical engineering and invited to realize the Institute. He very efficiently developed the concept for the Institute, defined and made operative its equipment and research infrastructure and, in parallel, established the first Masters Curriculum in Medical Engineering on university level in Germany, involving 60 professors and lecturers representing 9 TUM departments, in 2000. Prof. Wintermantel held the position of Chairman of Medical Engineering from 2000 through 2016, taking academic responsibility for a very high number of bachelors, masters and Ph.D. theses and initiated 4 new university professorships in the field.
